ANNUAL BIRDING TRIP – LAKE TAWAKONI STATE PARK

Clear your calendar, charge your camera, and warn your binoculars they’re about to earn their keep.

This is it—the sweet spot of spring migration at Lake Tawakoni, when the trees practically start singing back. And yes… EVERYONE IS WELCOME. Beginners, experts, and those who just like being outside pretending they’re experts—we’ve got room for all.

We’ll once again be joined by Richard Kinney, who knows this place so well the birds probably recognize him and adjust their flight plans accordingly. If there’s something special within a half-mile radius, Richard will find it.

And the timing? Just about perfect. Expect the woods to be buzzing with color and motion:

• Painted Buntings looking like flying rainbows
• Baltimore & Orchard Orioles (and yes, often in big numbers)
• A parade of vireos passing through like they’ve got somewhere important to be
• Hooded, Wilson’s, Black-throated Green, Yellow Warblers…
• And a long supporting cast of “Wait… what was THAT?” moments

MEETING DETAILS:
We’ll gather at the small pond just past the park entrance (near the RV dump station). You’ll check in and pay at the gate first.

I’ll be there early in my white pickup, likely already talking to a bird that may or may not be cooperating.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

• Some walking at a couple of different locations
• Mild weather, but the morning may have a little chill—bring a light jacket
• Bring water, maybe a snack, binoculars (highly recommended unless you enjoy squinting), and a camera if you’re feeling ambitious
• Insect repellent… because the mosquitoes did not get the memo about personal space

This is one of those mornings that reminds you why you got into birding in the first place. Or accidentally got into birding. Either way—you’ll leave smiling.
